Upgraded Safety Standards & Achievements

As part of the announcement, IIHS upgraded the 2024 Ioniq 5 from a Top Safety Pick to a Top Safety Pick+ due to it meeting new requirements. According to IIHS, the Ioniq 5 made advancements in rear occupant safety, specifically the stringent requirements of the new Offset Deformable Barrier (ODB 2.0) crashworthiness evaluation, which now includes rear occupant protection. The Ioniq 5’s enhanced safety features and robust build quality advanced it to the highest safety rating available.

Additionally, the 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe and 2024 Hyundai Sonata have both been awarded the Top Safety Pick designation. These awards are a testament to Hyundai’s continuous efforts to enhance their vehicles’ safety, ensuring that both new and returning models meet the rigorous standards set by the IIHS.

Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure, and Driver Assist Warnings were all made standard across the Hyundai lineup in an effort to meet the challenge.

IIHS Top Safety Pick Importance

The IIHS Top Safety Pick evaluation focuses on preventing fatalities on roadways and protecting occupants. To qualify for an IIHS Top Safety Pick, vehicles must earn good ratings in the small overlap front, original moderate overlap front, and updated side tests. For the Top Safety Pick+, vehicles must achieve good ratings in the small overlap front and updated side tests and at least an acceptable rating in the updated moderate front crash test. Additionally, both awards require vehicles to have acceptable or good ratings for pedestrian front crash prevention and headlights rated acceptable or good on all trim levels.
