A dead battery is one of the worst experiences any driver can have. A battery has a limited life, and it will wear out and fail. As your Hyundai dealer, we can install a new car battery for you. To prevent you from experiencing a dead battery at the worst time, these are some signs that your battery is failing.

Warning Signs You Need a New Car Battery From Your Hyundai Dealer

Slow Cranking

Your battery provides the power to the starter solenoid which, in turn, initiates the crank. If your battery is working normally, your engine will crank and turn over. If, however, you’re confronted with the depressing sounds of an engine trying to crank, this suggests a problem with your battery. As your battery ages, it becomes more difficult for it to recharge, and this will cause available power to drop.

Powering the starter solenoid uses a large percentage of your battery’s reserves. A weakening battery may take several attempts to build enough power to start the crank. Our technicians will also check your alternator. A damaged alternator can prevent your battery from fully charging. A damaged alternator can’t supply enough power to completely charge your battery. Our technicians will investigate and fix the problem.

Foul Smell From the Engine

Your battery contains several different chemicals used in the complex processes of storing energy and being able to recharge. One of the most important is sulfuric acid. In time, the chemical reactions inside the battery cause the sulfuric acid to break down, which releases hydrogen gas. This gas can escape from a worn battery into the engine compartment.

In the engine, hydrogen gas mixes with other chemicals in the air and forms hydrogen sulfide. If you start to smell rotten eggs, the most likely cause is a damaged battery. Hydrogen sulfide is also the chemical that causes corrosion on the battery terminals and other parts of your engine. We will need to replace your battery if it’s leaking hydrogen, as this means that it’s wearing out.

Dim Lights

Dim lights could be a sign of failing headlight bulbs, or they could be a sign that your battery is failing. If you think your battery may be failing, you can test it by switching on the headlights when your engine is off. Note the brightness of your headlights, then turn them off and start your engine. Once your engine is running, turn on the headlights again and check their brightness.

When your engine is off, the battery supplies your car’s electrical demands. Once the engine is running, the alternator supplies all of your car’s electrical needs. If the lights are brighter when the engine is running, this is a sign that your battery is weakening. Our technicians will check it, as it may be a bad electrical connection.
