Although recent world events made home isolation a temporary necessity, regularly going outside and enjoying the fresh air is good for both your body and your mind. Those living in Bentonville, Arkansas, are lucky to have many wonderful options when it comes to spending a fun day outdoors.

  1. Orchards Park

Located near the Bentonville Third Street Historic District, this park is a great place for a quick walk. Its name is an homage to the city’s agricultural history, Bentonville_children_walkingespecially as a major local apple producer. Being right in town means it’s easily accessible, making it the ideal place to take an early morning stroll or an evening walk after work to clear your mind. The park has plenty of walking trails, a fountain, and even a large gazebo that can be used for various gatherings.

  1. Slaughter Pen Trail

If your idea of fun time outdoors involves riding on bike trails, this is the best spot in town for that. With over 20 miles of challenging and exciting trails for all skill levels, a visit to this place can result in hours of adrenaline-pumping fun. There are also many hiking trails for those who are not into biking but would like to enjoy the wonderful surroundings and great views of the city.

  1. The Ozark – St. Francis National Forests

If you’re more of a hardcore outdoor adventurer and would like to leave the city and all modern life behind, the Ozark and St. Francis National Forests are approximately two hours southeast of Bentonville. The two are next to each other but have different characteristics and attractions. The Ozark National Forest is a botanist’s paradise with over 500 species of trees and other woody plants. It’s also home to Mount Magazine, the tallest mountain in the entire state, and the fascinating Blanchard Springs Caverns. Overall, it’s a fantastic place for hiking, mountain biking, canoeing, fishing, and other exciting outdoor activities.

The St. Francis National Forest is smaller than the Ozark but just as beautiful. This is the ideal place to come if you’re passionate about fishing, as the two main lakes here — Bear Creek Reservoir and Storm Creek Lake — have a large and diverse fish population. You’ll mostly catch crappie, largemouth bass, channel catfish, and warmouth.

  1. Bark Park

If you have a dog, it probably loves the freedom of the outdoors more than you do. Bark Park is right in town and stretches over 1.3 acres, giving dogs the freedom of an off-leash recreational area made just for them. There are special segregated areas for small and large dogs, as well as an agility course to help your best friend get some exercise.

Although many of us spend much of our time in offices, apartments, and houses, it helps to remember that we have all evolved to live and work outside. Spending some time outdoors every week will improve both your mental and your physical health, giving you the energy and determination you need to tackle life’s challenges.
